The one with the hole in the ground

2:42 PM

Hello from the Yilgarn!

It's my third day on site and it's also the third day in a row that it has been raining. Everything is wet outside, the pit is muddy, and there is no production happening (the picture above was taken during a pause , but it quickly started pouring down again). It's supposed to be a quiet day in the working life of kae, but rainy days often means panic day.

I'm currently out here on a relief assignment as the normal advisor is currently on annual leave. So besides being thrown in the deep end after 1.5 days of handover, I have also been thrown in the 'kae we need you to run a presentation since its raining' type day. It's been a bit of a hectic day , but at least it's making the days go by.

Before I got here, I had heard love stories about the place and about the people. Three days in, i'm still undecided. Why?
  • My last site was situated in a town, so I had many amenities and facilities accesible to me. A town there is not here. Instead, it is a workers' camp with a dry mess and a wet mess (a place that sells alcohol for those that don't work in the industry).
  • There is a small dry mess here, which would be about the size of the dessert section at my last site. hehe. You know i love food ;)
  • And thirdly, the people. Sure, there are some lovely people and some friendly familiar faces but there are some which i'm still yet to form an opinion of. Hopefully that opinion will be positive.

Sounds like a bit of whinging doesn't it? unfortunately for us FIFO /DIDO workers, work = home for more time than I am actually at home. And as always, it takes a little bit to make a place feel like home.. so let's give it some time hey ?

Why hello there ....

4:00 PM

Well, it has been about 2 years since I last wrote on my blog . I kind off left everything hanging didn't I (not that my life really is that interesting?!). But, the other night, I was flicking through some old blog posts and realised that I actually enjoyed reading back every now and then and reliving an event, a moment, though possibly not a crisis. So I decided to start blogging again, if only just to have some way of capturing life as it is.

So what has happened in the last two years? Well, given that most people already know I won't bore you with the details but it goes a little like:
  • I embarked on a career that involved a heck of a lot of travel
  • I worked in a very remote area for the first 10 months, with hardly any phone or internet access, horribly light aircraft and unreliable jets.
  • My brother got married, and moved out of home
  • I bought a house and also moved out of home
  • I've spent the last 8 months at a site that I loved but was forced to close down due to the low commodity prices and as luck would have it, is now heading back up.
  • Following the shut down of the site, I moved back to Perth and back into my oldies' place. I still own my house but I am no longer based there although I would like to be.
So one could say that in the last 2 years, my life has been somewhat disruptive, disorganised and unscheduled. But it's also had it's up moments - moments such as eating on cardboard boxes the first night I got my house because I had no furniture yet, moments such as having 6 days off every second week to relax and enjoy with my bf, moments such as getting a new sister in the family ... Moments which unfortunately could not always be shared with the people in my life because I (or they) were away, where internet and phone access was not available, or simply where life got too busy to take a moment to breath .

Hopefully this will change that :)
